Hwy 61 signage replacement begins May 18
DULUTH, Minn. – MnDOT District 1 will be starting a signage replacement project on Hwy 61 on Monday, May 18 lasting until mid-August. The project area extends from Duluth to just outside of Grand Marais. Lane and shoulder closures will be required during daytime hours with a 12 foot lane width restriction. Signs being replaced have reached the end of their useful life.
MnDOT road work has been identified as a critical service in Gov. Tim Walz’s Stay at Home executive order. MnDOT is being as flexible as possible with schedules during this period of lower traffic volumes to keep projects moving forward and minimize the impact to motorists. Following guidance from state and federal health officials, and to prevent further spread of COVID-19, crews will maintain social distancing practices while working.
Important reminders for motorists regarding work zone safety:
- Slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate through with care and caution.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits. Fine for a violation in a work zone is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

The Silver Bay City Council has designated Saturday, May 23rd, June 20th, August 22nd and September 19th as citywide exchange days. This day is designated for residents to place unwanted items on their boulevard. Please be sure to remove all items from the boulevard before the Monday following the exchange day, otherwise items will be picked up and disposed of at the resident’s expense.
City of Silver Bay has started construction on upgrading its preliminary treatment at the Wastewater Treatment Facility.
Silver Bay’s Wastewater Treatment Facility is an existing gravity collection system consisting of varying pipe sizes. The City performs infrastructure improvements as necessary to replace aging infrastructure. The City has been focusing improvements on areas believed to be major sources of infiltration and inflow (I&I). In addition, the safety of our employees is of concern as our current system is manual and employees are forced to work in confined spaces. The new automated system will remove the confined spaces making it safer for the employees.
Total project costs are expected to be $4.5 million. Funding for the project will come through a combination of $2 million in grants and the remaining $2.5 million from a 1% loan from the Public Facilities Authority (PFA). Construction will primarily take place in 2020; however, parts of the project will carry over and closeout in 2021.
