FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Community Theatre Changes Name & Status

Silver Bay Area Community Theatre is now Lake Superior Community Theatre (LSCT). The name change reflects the five year old community theatre’s evolution from an unincorporated, grass roots organization to a federal 501(c)(3) non profit charitable organization, according to LSCT executive director Paul Deaner.

The federal tax exempt status will allow Lake Superior Community Theatre to be eligible to apply for more grants and the name change will give the theatre stronger marketing appeal in Lake County and beyond, Deaner said.

This past summer, a board of directors was formed including Rick Frericks - chairperson, Brad Johnson - vice. chairperson, Chip Brown - treasurer, Roxanne Lillis - secretary and Deaner.

The mission of Lake Superior Community Theatre is to provide quality local theatre productions for both educational and entertainment benefits, promote the continuation and growth of the arts within North Shore communities and strengthen community relations through active participation, according to its articles of incorporation.

Since it’s inception in March, 2002, the community theatre has presented four musicals and one comedy, entertaining a total audience of about 6000 in its auditorium home at William Kelley High School in Silver Bay. Hundreds of cast, orchestra and crew members have participated in creating LSCT’s full scale productions.

"Partnerships have been and are the key to making this work," said Deaner. "Strong cooperation and administrative support from Lake Superior School District, Community Education and Kelley High Principal George Starkovich provide the needed infrastructure support. Financial contributions from area businesses, individuals, units of government, regional granting organizations and ticket sales have combined to drive the economics of LSCT. Enormous volunteer support and strong leadership are other vital partnerships."

The theatre’s mailing address and office are now located at Kelley High. It also has a web link at www.silverbay.com.
LSCT’s healthy financial footing has allowed it to reinvest monies back into the auditorium with basic maintenance and needed equipment upgrades such as a new lighting control board, new curtains, new projector screens, new lighting fixtures, bulbs, periodic stage floor painting and the all-important stage fog machine.

In recent weeks Lake Superior Community Theatre’s "sets in the city" carpentry crew has been working feverishly to build flats for its next spring musical production, ANNIE. Earlier this month the annual scene painting workshop was a huge success and the recent ANNIE audition information session attracted 50 participants, according to Deaner.

Auditions for ANNIE will be held in December at Kelley High with rehearsals beginning in January. The show "hits the boards" on April 11, 12, 13, 2008.

The board of directors are considering the purchase of a wireless microphone system and Deaner will coordinate a logo contest for the "new" theatre.
