BYE BYE BIRDIE PRESENTED IN SILVER BAY
Silver Bay Area Community Theatre's musical comedy production of BYE BYE BIRDIE hit the stage March 26, 27 & 28, 2004 in the Silver Bay William M. Kelley High School auditorium. A cast of 61 and pit orchestra of 18 entertained over 1200 theatre patrons.
The audience was treated to a high octane presentation of music, dance, comedy and sets that exploded with color and excitement. The late 1950's/early 60's setting was punctuated with the scene painting style of Annie Andrus and the costuming of Lori Negard.
BYE BYE BIRDIE is a spoof on the hysteria surrounding the 1958 U.S. Army induction of rock star Elvis Presley. "Birdie" was the first musical focusing on the convergence of the rock-n-roll world of teenagers and its accompanying parental angst.
The cast was led by the rock solid team of leading man Chip Brown and leading lady Terri Frericks-Blood. Featured supporting members included the stunning Heather Sullivan (Kim MacAfee), Brian Halvorson (as rock star Conrad Birdie), Brad Johnson (Mr. Harry MacAfee), Annie Andrus (Mrs. Mae Peterson), Darian Willette (Hugo Peabody), Lura E. Wilson (the very teenage Ursula Merkle), Tracy Thun (Mrs. Doris MacAfee) and Guthrie Cunningham (Randolph MacAfee).
Mr. Johnson's characterization of Harry MacAfee, Ms. Andrus' portrayal of Mae Peterson and Sarah Mismash's Gloria Rasputin were show stoppers.
Unfortunately, Mr. Cunningham had to bow out of performances due to chicken pox. His lines and songs were covered marvelously by cast members.
BYE BYE BIRDIE was directed by Paul Deaner; stage managed by Betsey Mead with musical direction from David Haaversen and choreography by Susan Michels.
