The City of Silver Bay Public Works Department is responsible for the city storm sewer system, streets, cemetery, and airport. This includes snow plowing, sanding, pothole patching, sidewalk replacement, and storm sewers, city right of way maintenance, and tree care.

The street department is responsible for plowing 23 miles of roadway and approximately 26 miles of sidewalk.

WINTER PARKING

The winter parking ordinance 1000.05 subd. 12 goes in effect November 1st through April 30th. Parking is not permitted on the streets between the hours of 11:00 pm and 6:00 am to allow for snow plowing of the streets. Violators may be ticketed and/or towed.

BOULEVARD PARKING & PLACEMENT OF PERSONAL PROPERTY

No person shall park any vehicle nor place any personal property upon any boulevard, which is the area between the curb line and the property line. An ordinance violation is a misdemeanor. (sec 1000.05 subd 3)

No person shall park any vehicles, or combination of vehicles, including but not limited to Motor Homes, Campers and other Recreational Vehicles, that is 22 feet or more in length, or any vehicle that is more than 6 ½ feet in height or width on any street in the City of Silver Bay for more than 24 consecutive hours once in any 7 consecutive day period unless otherwise authorized in writing by the Silver Bay Police Department.  (sec 1000.5 subd 10 & 11)

SNOW PLOWING

The city snow plowing ordinance (sec 920.07 sub 4) states that no one shall deposit snow upon the property of another or into city streets or sidewalks. Violators are subject to a citation.

STORM DRAINS

The City asks that you do not rake leaves, grass, etc. from your boulevard into the city streets as they will collect on top of the storm sewers, plugging them and preventing proper water drainage.

BOULEVARD TREES

The city code prohibits trimming of boulevard trees. Please contact the City Hall at (218) 226.4408 or the Street Department at (218) 226.4552 if you feel your boulevard tree needs trimming.

STREET LIGHTS

Periodically a city street light may go out, work intermittently or “blink” quite continuously. Should this happen, please call City Hall at (218) 226.4408, the Street Department at (218) 226.4552, or fill out the work order request form and explain the problem and location of the street light. We will, in turn, notify Minnesota Power.
