Delays and congestion expected during North Shore travel this weekend

DULUTH, Minn. – Motorists should expect delays when traveling towards and along the North Shore starting this Thursday, August 4 through Sunday, August 7 due to large events and construction impacts. With the Festival of Sail in Two Harbors and the Grand Marais Fisherman’s Picnic, traffic congestion is anticipated. 

If attending the Festival of Sail, please follow parking signs and be aware that temporary side street closures and parking restrictions are expected.

Minnesota Design Team Visit

Community Visioning Session

Over the past few months the city has been working to understand the community’s needs and vision our economic and development plan for the future. This work has included the city surveys that went out and most recently hosting the Minnesota Design Team May 19-21. The process included presentations that highlighted the communities current organizations and assets, a city tour and a community input session on Friday night. The design team then synthesized this information to provide a suggested development plan that took into consideration the community’s core values and needs. The attached presentation is a summary of their visit and design ideas. For more information stop in City Hall.

POSITION OPENING CHIEF OF POLICE

The City of Silver Bay is accepting applications for the position of Chief of Police.  The primary function of this position is to direct the administration and operations of the Police Department and carry out the mission and vision for the City. Supervise, coordinate, lead, teach, schedule activities, conduct criminal investigations, enforce laws and ordinances, communicate internally and externally, and be a patrolling officer. Applicants must have five (5) years experience as a Police Officer, graduation from high school or equivalent, Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) license, at least one (1) year administrative and supervisory experience and/or have completed a Police Chief Command or Management School, and must not have a criminal record. This is a full-time position with competitive wages and benefits. 2022 City Wide Exchange Days

The Silver Bay City Council has designated Saturday, May 21st, June 11th, August 20th, and September 17th as citywide exchange days.  This day is designated for residents to place unwanted items on their boulevard.  Please be sure to remove all items from the boulevard before the Monday following the exchange day, otherwise items will be picked up and disposed of at the resident’s expense.

The place of filing for federal offices is the Office of the Secretary of State, State Office Building, Room 180, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155-1299. The place of filing for state offices is with the Office of the Secretary of State or with the County Auditor of the county in which the candidate resides. The place of filing for county offices is with the office of the County Auditor.

Candidates may file in person or by mail if the filing is received during the filing period. Candidates who will be absent from the state during the filing period and meet the requirements of Minnesota Statutes section 204B.09, subdivision 1a, may arrange to file during the seven days immediately preceding the candidate’s absence from the state.

Neighborhood Revitalization Mini-Grant

The City of Silver Bay, in partnership with Lake County Housing & Redevelopment Authority, has developed a neighborhood revitalization mini-grant program to help make improvements to the exterior of properties within the city limits of Silver Bay.  Residents and businesses are eligible to apply.  No income limit.  The maximum grant request per household or business is $500.  Applications and information are available at City Hall or you can download the application here.  The City will begin accepting completed applications at 8:00am on May 2, 2022 and review will be on a first come, first serve basis, while funds are available.  Priority will be given to first-time applicants.  Emailed applications will not be accepted.

Water/Wastewater Operator Job Opening

The City of Silver Bay is accepting applications for the position of Water and Wastewater Operator within the City Public Utilities Department. Desired minimum qualifications include possessing a valid Class B driver’s license with tanker endorsement and a valid minimum Class D certification for water and wastewater. This is a full-time union position with competitive wages, benefits, and retirement. The 2022 full pay rate is $24.90 – $31.12/hour, depending upon qualifications and experience, with full pay rate achievable within one year. SUMMER & PART TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The City of Silver Bay is now accepting adult & student applications to prepare for the 2022 part-time & summer employment (6 months or less positions). You can also call City Hall, Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm, to request an application be mailed to you. Completed applications should be returned with original signature to City Hall, 7 Davis Drive, Silver Bay, MN 55614 by 4:00pm on Friday, April 15, 2022; however, the City will continue to accept applications until all positions have been filled and if openings become available throughout the summer. The following positions that will be available are:

  1. Street Department Aides: These positions will be up to 40 hrs/wk. Must be at least 16 years of age. Employee will operate lawn mowers, weed whips, clean up trash, prune trees, replacing sidewalks, raking, cutting sod, and other miscellaneous street maintenance jobs, as directed. Rate of pay: $13.00/hour.
  2. Campground Aide II – office: This position will be scheduled for up to 40hrs/per week. Must be at least 16 years of age. Employee will assist in the daily operations of the Campground including but not limited to answering phones, campground reservations, assist campers with checking in/check outs, ensure fees have been paid, firewood and merchandise sales, assist in balancing of daily reporting, and other duties as assigned and may need to assist in cleaning bathrooms and shower facilities. Must be available weekends. Rate of pay: $15.00/hour
  3. Campground Aide II – grounds: These positions will be up to 40 hrs/week. Must be at least 16 years of age. Employee will be responsible for operating lawn mowers, weed whips, clean up trash, cleaning facilities, cleaning sites, assist with Black Beach Park cleanup, and other miscellaneous tasks as assigned. These positions must be available on weekends. Rate of pay: $15.00/hour
  4. Park and Rec Assistant: This position will be up to 40 hrs/wk. Must be at least 18 years of age. Employee will assist Park and Rec Director with recreation programming, instructing, and coordination of youth summer programs including baseball, softball, open gym/volleyball, tennis, dryland hockey, Prairie Fire Theatre, Arts and Crafts, and other miscellaneous Parks and Rec jobs. Need to be available to work tournament weekends and occasional evenings. Rate of pay: $15.00/hour
  5. Park and Rec Aide – Rec Program: This position will be up to 40 hrs/wk. Must be at least 16 years of age. Employee will assist with recreation programming including youth baseball, softball, open gym/volleyball, tennis, dryland hockey, Prairie Fire Theatre, Arts and Crafts, ballfield maintenance (mowing and raking), and other miscellaneous Parks and Rec jobs. Need to be available to work tournament weekends and occasional evenings. Rate of pay: $13.00/hour
  6. Parks and Rec Aides – Groundskeeping: These positions will be up to 40 hrs/wk. Must be at least 16 years of age. Employee will operate lawn mowers, weed whips, clean up trash, painting, shoveling, raking, and other miscellaneous Park and Recreation jobs to keep park and city areas clean. Rate of pay: $13.00/hour
  7. Swim Instructor Supervisor: This position will be up to 40 hrs/wk. Must be at least 18 years of age. Employee will be responsible for instructing swimming lessons, supervising open swim, and other miscellaneous Park and Rec jobs as directed. Applicant must have WSI licensure. Rate of pay: $15.00/hour
  8. Swim Instructor: This position will be up to 40 hrs/wk. Must be at least 16 years of age. Employee will assist in swimming lessons, open swim, and miscellaneous Park and Rec jobs as directed. WSI Preferred but not required. Rate of pay: $13.00/hour
  9. Library Aide: This position will be up to 20 hrs/wk. Must be at least 16 years of age. Employee will assist in library operations and programming. Rate of pay: $11.50/hour.
