Governor Walz signs Unemployment Extension for Cleveland-Cliffs Mining Workers

On Wednesday, January 25, 2023 Silver Bay Mayor, Wade LeBlanc, attended the signing by Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, for extension of unemployment benefits to the mining workers impacted by the shutdown of Northshore Mining.  Lake County Commissioner, Rick Goutermont, and Lake County Chamber President, Janelle Jones, also attended the signing.  The Mayor had sent letters and testified at the Capitol advocating for the unemployment extension in an effort to help retain families within our community.  “If we lose these families in our community, we lose our workforce for both the mining company and our other businesses that are already struggling to find employees.  We also could lose the students in our schools if families move.”  Our new Senator Grant Hauschild and Representative Dave Lislegard championed the bill in the Legislature, along with other bill co-authors including our new Representative Roger Skraba.  The City of Silver Bay thanks all who supported our mining workers and our community.
